I recently traveled to Wellington to demonstrate how Cytowave works for the owner of a fifteen year old Hanoverian. The horse had multiple back issues and several other issues that hadn't been identified.
I placed the back blanket & coils on him and planned on doing a 30 minute back treatment. In general, during a back treatment you'll see a horse start yawning, licking and chewing about five to ten minutes in. In this case, this horse reacted in less than a minute. His back started twitching - so much so that I was worried. The owner looked at me and asked "What is that?" and my reply was "I have no bloody idea."
I called the inventor and a physical therapist and they said that it sounded like there was so much tension in and around his shoulders that it was a release. Erring on the side of caution, I suggested doing 10 minutes of the 30 minute treatment to give the horse a chance to acclimate itself to the treatment. I suggested 10 minutes the next day and work her way up to the 30 minutes, then one hour treatment.
The owner called 5 days later and said that for the first time in 15 years that her horse listened to her when she used her knee to nudge him into a right turn and that he felt incredible under saddle. "If I would have had this ten years ago he'd be a champion!" she stated.
It's a good illustration that it's never too late to start treating horses. Many times owners don't even know what is wrong with their horse, only that they are uncomfortable or not being themselves. Which is why our "maintenance & inflammation" program is the most heavily used because it addresses the root of every issue: inflammation.
